Head Spins: Juan BassHead

DSC_0733(2).jpg

On the corner of Breakbeat and Bass, in the town of Danceville, there hangs a cat whose scratch is surely as deep as the hiss of some vintage vinyl. I’m not talking about some throwback turntablist trying to revive the art of the back-cue, mind you - hell, most of the time those guys don’t even use vinyl. And I’m not talking about someone playing your plain ol’ everyday Miami bass either (though the cat in question doesn’t hesitate to throw that down when necessary).

No, what I’m talking about is a sound-slinger going well below the surface of what goes down in beatitude - and coming up with the next big swing. I mean the dubstep, and the electro that goes down better with more drums. And if you’re looking to hear a little new-fashioned drum’n'bass, as well, there’s probably no better slinger of the sound than Miami’s own Juan BassHead.

Alongside the U.K.-based producer A Sides, BassHead’s behind the label of the same name. The imprint counts among its top signings the L.A. whiz-spinner 12th Planet (aka John Dada, aka Infiltrata), whose “Control” was recently sickeningly remixed by “King of Dubstep” DJ Skream. Coming up in ‘09, BassHead (the label) plans to unleash the likes of Miami sonic mastermind Otto Von Schirach, Seattle’s Noah D (who teams with Jamaica’s heavyweight MC Einstein), and Chi-town’s hip-hopping Total Science (remixed by the infamous DJ Sneak).
With his sister, Mariana, BassHead co-owns the DJ dive known as Black Sheep (formerly Laundry Bar). The place recently blew out Basel by bringing down Breakbeat Science’s DJ DB, and where every kind of sonic cacophony is not only welcomed - it’s encouraged.

But we’re here to cover BassHead’s DJ skills. Born right here in the MIA, schooled out at USC, and trained in the classical, BassHead began his head-spinning where most of the underground’s finest got their start - at house parties, in both Miami-Dade and Broward. Sure, there were the occasional club gigs (Lauderdale’s Atlantis, Miami’s Lounge 16), and yes, there was the eventual roaming party (Infrastructure) and a few outdoor fests (Zen, Beyond). But 10 years ago the places where a drum’n'bass-head could ply his or her trade were few and far between.

Snap forward to now, and the available venues still are in short supply. Perhaps that’s why he opened his own. Yet BassHead continues to drop his patented concoction of “bass-heavy dance-floor underground”at any place that’ll dare have him. If you missed the recent Candyland 13 shebang, you can still catch BassHead holding court every Friday at Black Sheep. If you dig your breaks big, you’ll break off a chunk of your calendar and make it. If not, hey, the easy listening stations could always use an audience. Beat that, sucka!

Juan BassHead’s Top Five of All Time:
1.  “Flashlight,” Parliament
2.  “Security,” The Beat Club
3.  “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang,” Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg
4. Wormhole LP, Ed Rush & Optical
5.  Nessun Dorma, Puccini

How’s that salad?

BRENNAN: There are many health benefits to being vegetarian. It’s a rational choice in a world where food supplies… are affected by global warming issues.

BOOTH: What about global taste issues?

BRENNAN: Is that meat sweet, rich, super-lean, and soft?

[Booth throws his burger down.]

BOOTH: What, does it taste like horse meat?

BRENNAN: Maybe you should consider going vegetarian, too.

BOOTH: I didn’t lose my appetite because you mentioned horse meat, I lost my appetite because you made me think about all those people parading around, pretending to be something they aren’t, just so they could have crappy sex.

BRENNAN: How do you know it’s crappy?

BOOTH: Gotta be, Bones, come on! It’s gotta be!

BRENNAN: Why?!

[Booth leans forward towards Brennan.]

BOOTH: Why? I’ll tell you why. Here we are. All of us are basically alone, separate creatures just circling each other. All searching for that slightest hint of a real connection. Some look in the wrong places,

[Cut to a shot of Zack, in the lab, examining a bone.]

BOOTH: (V/O, CONT’D) Some, they just give up hope because in their mind they’re thinking ‘Oh, there’s nobody out there for me.’

[Cut to a shot of Cam, applying lipstick in the mirror.]

BOOTH: (V/O, CONT’D) But all of us, we keep trying over, and over again. Why? Because every once in a while,

[Cut to a shot of the picture of Angela and her husband lying next to the copy of “The Furies”]

BOOTH: (V/O, CONT’D) Every once in a while, two people meet. And there’s that spark.

[Cut to a shot of Hodgins and Angela making out in the lab.]

BOOTH: (V/O, CONT’D) And yes Bones, he’s handsome. And she’s beautiful. And maybe that’s all they see at first…

[Cut back to Booth and Brennan in the diner.]

BOOTH: (CONT’D) But making love? Making. Love. That’s when two people become one.

BRENNAN: It is… scientifically impossible for two objects to occupy the same space.

BOOTH: Yeah, but what’s important is we try. And when we do it right, we get close.

BRENNAN: To what? Breaking the laws of physics?

BOOTH: Yeah, Bones. A miracle. Those people- role-playing and their fetishes and their little sex games- It’s crappy sex. Well, at least compared to the real thing.

BRENNAN: (Considering) You’re right.

BOOTH: (Defensive) Yeah, but- Wait a second, I just won that argument?

BRENNAN: Yup.

[Booth and Brennan grin at each other as the scene fades to black.]

December 23 Birthday Astrology

by Jill M. Phillips

December 23 Capricorns have a great deal of emotional pluck. If plans fail, they simply start again. Because of their good attitude and ability to motivate others, they make excellent mentors. Although they may seem scatterbrained, they have great organizational abilities. Witty and intelligent, they are exceptionally verbal for people of their sign.

Friends and Lovers

Because they have such a likable nature, December 23 individuals make friends effortlessly but are unlikely to reveal confidences or ask for advice. Love is a permanent and practical factor in their lives. They value stability and do not usually seek separation or divorce unless there is no alternative.

Children and Family

December 23 natives love the traditions of family and typically have happy memories of childhood. Though their upbringing is likely to have been strict, they look at this as positive. They are good parents who do everything to provide stability for their child. Though they promote fun, they are strict on discipline.

Health

People born on this date have a common-sense approach to good health. By not overdoing anything, they reap the rewards without losing out on the occasional need to indulge a bad habit. Health problems are typically minor, but problem skin is not unknown. If they make water their main beverage, the skin condition is likely to clear up.

Career and Finances

People born on this date are serious about career ambitions. They work hard, learn quickly, obey the rules, and they know that professional shortcuts can be deceptive. They often spend a great deal of money on home decorating, with an eye for antiques and other objets d’art that will increase in value.

Dreams and Goals

To climb to the top without fudging the rules is a common goal of December 23 people. They know what they want and are willing to work hard to get it, no matter how hard that may be. They never blame setbacks on anyone but themselves. If a goal becomes impossible to fulfill, they replot the course.

Microsoft issuing emergency fix for browser flaw

REDMOND, Wash.(AP)

Microsoft Corp. is taking the unusual step of issuing an emergency fix for a security hole in its Internet Explorer software that has exposed millions of users to having their computers taken over by hackers.

The “zero-day” vulnerability, which came to light last week, allows criminals to take over victims’ machines simply by steering them to infected Web sites; users don’t have to download anything for their computers to get infected, which makes the flaw in Internet Explorer’s programming code so dangerous. Internet Explorer is the world’s most widely used Web browser.

Microsoft said it plans to ship a security update, rated “critical,” for the browser on Wednesday. People with the Windows Update feature activated on their computers will get the patch automatically.

Thousands of Web sites already have been compromised by criminals looking to exploit the flaw. The bad guys have loaded malicious code onto those sites that automatically infect visitors’ machines if they’re using Internet Explorer and haven’t employed a complicated series of workarounds that Microsoft has suggested.

Microsoft said it has seen attacks targeting the flaw only in Internet Explorer 7, the most widely used version, but has cautioned that all other current editions of the browser are vulnerable.

Microsoft rarely issues security fixes for its software outside of its regular monthly updates. The company last did it in October, and a year and half before that.

XRX International Entertainment Group, Inc.’s Subsidiary Signs Recording Artist

2008-12-01 15:24:35 - XRX International Entertainment Holding Group, Inc. (XRXH pink sheets) a publicly held company, announced today, that its wholly owned subsidiary, Side

TJ Kelly Band is an original band from Ft. Myers, Florida, whose musical

talents and introduced

together, they went into Unity Gain Studios to record a five song demo
produced by Cliff Williams and Steve Loungo (John Enwistle Band). The band
recorded the songs “Bring Me Down”, “Horses”, “Kerosine”, “Burn Me Slow” and
“Angel”. After finishing the EP, they hit the road opening for acts such as
Eddie Money and Robyn Zander of Cheap Trick. TJ’s melodies instantly grab the
listener while the depth of his songwriting creates a personal connection with

Side Bar Productions, Inc., has been a wholly owned subsidiary of XRX
International Entertainment Group, Inc. since 2002. XRX has always envisioned
booking, promoting, and securing original musical talent through one of its
own companies. Since the opening of its first upscale live entertainment
venue, called Swig Bartini in October 2001, the company has had countless well
known act’s perform at its live, upscale intimate music venue. XRX is now
taking advantage of one of its own subsidiaries, Side Bar Productions, Inc.
and is entering into the concert promotion arena. The company intends to take
full advantage of the synergy and economies of scale from having one of our
own companies working with these artists. Side Bar Productions, Inc. looks
forward to booking and promoting other artists to perform in our, or other
contracted venues.
Larry Moskowitz, the company’s chairman, stated, “During the past seven
years XRX has spent a majority of its energy perfecting and honing its
hospitality Bricks and Mortar operations through its subsidiary, Swig Bartini
www.swigbartini.com. I now feel the company has achieved the experience
needed to expand the concept to multiple units.” Additionally, Mr. Moskowitz
stated, “I find it is rewarding and gratifying that what I and the other
founders of the company envisioned years ago is still a viable business plan
in today’s economy and current marketplace.”

SWIG BARTINI CONCEPT
www.swigbartini.com

Swig Bartini & Bistro is operated by M-squared, a wholly owned subsidiary
of XRX (xrxh.pk) It was formed in 2000 exclusively to develop a unique
entertainment destination. Swig Bartini & Bistro includes several different
venues under one roof. These include, a music place for local and national
artists; a dance floor for performers and dancing; a Martini Bar with live
jazz, blues, and swing music; a restaurant offering fine food and beverages.
The subsidiary has devoted its efforts to various research and planning
functions including: demonstrating the financial viability of its concept,
exploring local and national markets for talent, researching other potential
locations, developing cross-marketing strategies, and creating strategic
alliances.
Mr. Moskowitz also stated, “The Swig Bartini concept grew out of the
market need for a small, comfortable venue to feature concerts where patrons
can enjoy entertainment in an intimate setting. In addition, Swig Bartini
offers all of the comforts expected from a great night on the town including
fine food, comfortable seating, gourmet coffee and spirits.”
The concept brings people to a single destination where they can spend
their music and entertainment dollar on everything from nationally known live
music to gourmet food and martinis. XRX, (XRXH.pk) as a holding company, has
organized this effort into a strategic entity for the purpose of creating
individual business units for maximum bottom-line accountability and
profitability. The mission statement of these business units will be to
maximize the consumers’ spending potential from a captive audience.

Dj Exodus and Paul Wicked - Stand Still feat. Aubrey

This track is officialy off the chain. If you like a bit of that progressive flying through a tunnel feeling this is a killer track. I can imagine hearing this on big dance floors at the top of the night. Very climatic, didn’t go overboard on the vocals. Overall well done. I’d give it an 8.  Coming to a big ass label soon!
